At St Anne's we're always keen to get students involved in college sport, whether you're hunting for a blue, looking for another source of sexy Anne';s stash, or just wishing to blow off steam after an essay crisis. We like to think that we have most sports on offer at some level but if students are passionate about anything that we don't yet play our Sports Rep will see what she can do to help make it happen.. for example there's been enough interest to start a St Anne's Basketball team this year. 'Cuppers' is the term for inter-collegiate tournaments and St Anne's enters teams for cuppers in a variety of sports.
Having got to the final of mixed cuppers, and with a strong mid-table performance in the top college league last year, hockey can rightfully be considered the jewel in the crown of St. Anne's Sport. Anne's is twinned with Somerville for hockey, forming the mighty Anne-Sommers, sponsored by Ann Summers (no, seriously!). At the time of writing the mixed tournament is just around the corner, and will undoubtedly bring more trophies for the Anne-Summers cabinet.
The St Anne's rugby club is joined with St. John's College. Although we take our rugby quite seriously, the emphasis is really on enjoyment. Our crew dates and curries, usually held at our beloved Mr Jamal's restaurant, are legendary throughout the university. On the pitch is where the magic really happens.
The sight of our back line gliding past oppositions combined with the driving, grunting, sweating beasts that are our forwards is well worth trekking up to the Fortress to behold. Last year was very successful for the 'Saints' as we were promoted and reached the Cuppers quarter-finals. Players of all abilities are welcome, so if you ever feel the urge to hit someone very hard or roll around in the mud with other men then just sign up, regardless of previous experience. Furthermore, around college, we rugby players have women and men swooning at our feet from all directions. What more incentive do you need to apply to St Anne's and play?
St Anne's is one of the biggest badminton clubs in the university. We cater for those who are already competent... and everyone else. We have teams entered in the inter-college league as well as the cuppers tournament. Weekly sessions are held at the Ferry sports centre - all are welcome to come along and hit some shuttles! (Racquets are available).
The St. Anne's football team is more than just a team - it's an institution. Known throughout the university as the MGA (Mint Green Army), we are one of the most successful sides in Oxford. Our home ground 'The Fortress' is not only impregnable but also one of the best pitches in the University, perfectly suited to our stylish 'total football' game. We currently field two full competitive sides so everyone, of every level of ability, is encouraged to get involved. As well as these teams in Trinity Term of each year we also compete in the Cuppers Five-A-Side tournament. This year our Firsts, in a competition of 74 college sides, took the trophy. It was won in emphatic style with victories over the Premiership champions Teddy Hall in the final, and a semi final win over a St. John's side who had gone unbeaten all season. We'll no doubt be adding to our trophy cabinet again this season. Off the field the MGA fosters a brilliant team spirit, with the MGA curries the stuff of legend. This year brings the newly formed women's team joint with St Hughs - and again the emphasis is on enjoyment.
As you've probably gathered by this point, if you like things to take your mind of your studies, Anne's is definitely the right place for you! It doesn't matter what level of ability you have, there's a team for you! That is exactly the case for the netball team, we accept anyone, guys, girls, limited hand-eye coordination... just so long as you're up for giving it your best shot and can play one match a week, you're in!
College tennis in Oxford is a summer sport, with league matches and Cuppers running throughout Trinity Term. This shouldn't stop you from getting your balls out during the rest of the year, however, as St Anne's share 3 hard courts (and 3 grass courts in Trinity) just up the road with St. John's. Players of all levels are welcome; the emphasis here is on fun and enjoyment (of tennis, and of the really good teas served after the matches at Worcester)!
Pool at St Anne's ranges from drunken 5ft blondes laughing hysterically at their wild misses.. to fierce competition, wounded pride, and tricky jump shots. There are three teams, so you can get competitive if you wish.. and it's a good way to visit other college's common rooms.
Not actually a sport as such, but a fun way to waste a summer afternoon down the river. College has four punts at your disposal, which can be hired free of charge, so BYO wine and strawberries!
You only have to have seen the boat race to understand that rowing is one of the main sports to get involved with in Oxford. And St Anne's Boat Club is the best possible place to row, cox, and even coach. Our boat club is improving fast - we've had a great year on the river, and need lots of freshers to continue our meteoric rise to greatness!
Loads of people in college just row socially - i.e. gently, mainly in the summer, in the afternoons, and when it's sunny. They also come on socials and crew dates - this is a good option! However, we're really proud of our competitive crews. We train hard and have lots of fun doing it! All the training pays off in the regattas each term when we row like pros and make all the other crews cry.
No other sport gives you the opportunity to compete in front of crowds of up to 10,000 people as we do at Summer Eights every year in Trinity term. Most competitive college rowing in Oxford is bumps racing, involving chasing (and hopefully hitting!) the boat in front of you. Rowing also involves a great social life; with post competition dinners, boat club cocktails, crew dates with other colleges, and rowing curries, you'll bond with other rowers fast.
During freshers' week, SABC runs a freshers' taster event at the end of the week so that everyone can have a go, followed by our first social of the year. Whether you end up a social rower or spending loads of time on the river, it's one of the best things you can do during your time in college.
