Written by current students, we hope it provides a useful insight into life at our college and all the things we love about it. If you’re thinking about applying to Oxford, this guide should tell you everything you need to know.
As one of thirty undergraduate colleges in Oxford, why should you, as a prospective student, opt for St Anne’s over any of the other colleges? The statistics and the facts tell part of the story: St Anne’s has a very large and diverse student body (there’s about 450 of us) most of whom reside in a large and salubrious North Oxford location, just far enough away from the prying eyes of tourists and yet still only 5-10 minutes walk away from the bright lights of Oxford city centre.
Due to its relative youth, St Anne's needn't be preoccupied with preserving crumbling old buildings; its focus can instead be upon improving the present and building for the future, which is exactly what is happening. The delightful college bar has received a makeover to make any inebriated student proud, whilst the library is constantly being added to, not with ancient first editions of old English poetry, the boast of many colleges, but with books that are actually useful. There are plans to expand and build a new library and the college is conveniently close to the new Humanities Building / Mathematical Institute being developed. Recent developments include STACS (St Anne's Coffee shop) which is like our own Starbucks in college, and the award-winning Ruth Deech building which provides a lecture theatre and 100 en-suite rooms.
There remains a good work/play balance at St Anne's. The college is full of sport teams catering for all levels, from the good, to the very enthusiastic. Among other distractions there is also a thriving music, arts and literature scene which host many events throughout the term and things to get involved in like use of the art room and dark room. In addition there are many other benefits that come with being a member of a large and diverse university like Oxford. Societies catering for any interest, no matter how strange (inter-collegiate Quidditch anyone? No, I didn't think so...) will be desperate for your membership. St Anne's has a thriving social scene, students from all disciplines and year groups gather together for some fun both inside and out of college.
But this is all part of what being at St Anne’s is about – getting involved and having fun doing it. We hope to show you that there really is nowhere better to spend the next three or more years of your life, so if you think you would like to be a part of it, come along, look around and sign up.
